This immersion provides an in-depth exploration of creative writing, with a focus on select forms of poetry and prose. Through a tailored experience oriented towards both skill building and the student’s individual artistic interests, they will learn to engage in constructive examination and construction of pieces, and gain perspective in both their creative works and the world around them.
Level 1 includes the following:
Classic Poetry 1:
– Select readings from Shel Silverstein, Roald Dahl, Dr. Seuss, Nikki Grimes, and Mary Ann Hoberman
– An introduction to identifying and constructing poetry with rhyme, repetition, rhythm, imagery, and shape
– Exploring words unfamiliar to the student and the context in which they were written
– Constructing summaries and describing shared experiences with example readings
– Memorization and recitation of poetry, as needed
Contemporary Prose 1:
– Select readings from Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary, Lewis Carroll, Jeff Kinney, and Jacqueline Woodson
– Types of sentences and when they are appropriate in a piece
– Transition or maintenance of emotional tone and situational experience in writing
– Integrative approach to grammar and spelling, as needed
– Common types of prose and differences in construction
