Spanish language and culture immersion

The goal of this program is to provide the skills to stimulate and improve the conversation flow between spanish-speaking parents and their children by teaching children how to describe relationships and elements of their surroundings that are central to their world as well as provide knowledge through which children can become immersed in Hispanic culture. 

Session 1: The basics 

  • Ice Breaker: Get to know the teacher, get to know the student, and evaluate the initial level of the child’s language proficiency
  • Learn about the countries that speak Spanish and the history of the language
  • Learn a fun Hispanic song!

Session 2: La Casa 

  • Explore housing styles in different Hispanic countries
  • Learn the names of new household items, their pronunciation, and practice using the new vocabulary in conversation
  • Look at the house from Encanto and map out the student’s own house to review the vocabulary

Session 3: La familia

  • Watch a scene from Encanto and learn about traditional and modern Hispanic families in different countries
  • Learn the correct titles for each family member and learn how to describe the student’s relationship to these members
  • Create a family tree to review family vocabulary

Session 4: El Tiempo 

  • Look at pictures of the rainforest, learn about climate in different Hispanic countries
  • Learn how to describe the weather in the past, present, and future
  • Learn a fun weather poem!

Session 5: La Comida 

  • Look at pictures of Hispanic cuisine and learn about foods from each Hispanic country
  • Learn the names of common grocery items and how to describe flavors
  • Design your own recipe!

Session 6: Los Animales

  • Learn about animals native to different Hispanic countries
  • Explore a variety of animal names, understand how to describe their features, and talk about their habitats
  • Look at pictures of the animals in your area and practice a conversation about them

Session 7: Tradiciones

  • Watch scene from Coco and learn about how Dia de Los Muertos is celebrated in different Hispanic countries
  • Learn to describe and talk about a tradition in the student’s family
  • Decorate your own Día de Los Muertos mask!

Session 8: Los Deportes 

  • Look at pictures and videos to learn about how each Hispanic country celebrates the Soccer World Cup
  • Learn the names of different sports and sports elements and how to describe the actions occurring in a match
  • Recreate your team’s flag!

Session 9: El Transporte 

  • Learn about transportation styles in different city and rural areas of Hispanic countries
  • Learn the names of different transportation styles and practice having a conversation about transportation in the student’s area
  • Vocabulary contest with flash cards!

Session 10: Wrap Up!

  • Read a short passage to practice pronunciation
  • Practice a conversation using topics the student has already learned
  • Learn a fun tongue twister!
